With this installation of sixteen cast glass sculptures measuring 20 to 75 centimeters, Drifts (2020, coldworking glass, variable dimensions), Comte presents his newest series of works. From a distance, the individual pieces look like raw rocks. Seen from close up, however, the fascinating interiors of the sculptures open up to the viewer, revealing a similarity to ice formations or crystals, so that they resemble living creatures created by nature. The title, Drifts, refers to the rocks and sediment that emerge through the erosion, shifting and debris of glaciers. Comte’s Drifts are connected to his group of sculptures, Untitled (Murano Glass Mountains, 2017, handcrafted Murano glass, granite dust, 40 x 29 x 20 cm, edition of 2 + I AP), which are also featured in the show. When observing under the natural light, people see the shining ice in mountain Everest far away from the routine life. The blue large canvas depicts earth underneath the melted glaciers. The artist coated the canvas with more than 39 layers of pure mineral pigments and paints. From the first glazing, it is dark black earth jets into the eyes. However like the light before ombre before dawn, the pure blue color slightly penetrates through the surface from the underneath. It brings hope and happiness of life in the deep sorrow of the land. Comte associates his use of pure black pigment with the dust (cryoconite) that has settled on so many of the world’s melting glaciers, blown in by strong winds and accelerating the ice’s melting process; it can also be interpreted as a metaphor for the decay currently happening in many of the icy areas of the world.Artist Statement This artwork showcases one of my blue monochrome pieces. I experimented to achieve the vibrant blue hue, layering red and green beneath the blue pigment. As I work on each layer, I'm fascinated by the transformation it undergoes. I deliberately leave traces visible, embracing imperfections as part of the artistic journey. The pigments I use, including lapis lazuli stone for blue and naturally sourced red, contribute to the rich contrast within the piece. My artistic process involves careful experimentation and layering, often leading to unexpected discoveries. Climate change is a significant theme in my work, reflecting my concern for the environment. I advocate for art's integration with nature, believing it can inspire action and dialogue on pressing issues. Empires were built and crumbled. The style remains even today in fashion and design. With this exhibition I want to combine the essence of my vision representing neoclassicism. By creating sculptures with light and objects that connect us to the history of neoclassic art. From early Rome to fascism, empires and images mostly have been destroyed. The remaining fragments and ideology should re- mind us that each one of them was seeking perfection. Albert Speer’s Olympia stadium in Berlin hosted the most spectacular games. Dedicated to neoclassic perfection. The global neoclassic dream shortly after crumbled. The variation and artworks and light sculptures especially created for this exhibi- tion are my personal analysis of the neoclassic style and time. The beauty of the surviving pieces remind me of the Pantheon and the Greek acropolis. Resting in perfect harmony. The essence of the coronation displaces power, control and the division of church and state. The beauty remains.Artist Statement Creating this installation was an exploration of neoclassicism's power and fragility, embodied in a room entirely cloaked in gold. The small hall leading to the central space, adorned with a reflection of the Holy Siege and the Cross of the Virgin Mary, symbolizes the grandeur and vulnerability inherent in this artistic period. In delving into neoclassicism, I aimed to distill its essence by stripping away extraneous elements, revealing its simplicity and complexity. Through my work, I sought to justify this often-misunderstood period, using abstraction and symbolism to engage viewers in dialogue. Neoclassicism, with its mixed styles and historical significance, permeates various aspects of our modern world, from fashion to politics. I draw parallels between neoclassical aesthetics and contemporary wealth and power, noting their recurrence in monumental structures like the Trump Tower. Gold, a central motif in neoclassical art, fascinated me for its dual nature—both practical and decorative. Its delicate application in my work mirrors the fragility of the neoclassical era itself, while its cultural significance across civilizations adds depth to its symbolism.
